Who we are, and what that means for our impacts
The business has supplied mobile satellite communications equipment and airtime since 1998, and was incorporated as Callmonitor Ltd in September 1999. We are a supplier and service provider, not a manufacturer. We employ four people at a single leased office at 207 Regent Street, London, we operate only in the UK, and we run no company vehicles.
We are a small business and we describe our impacts honestly rather than claiming more than our size allows. Our material environmental impacts are: the electricity used at our office; the end-of-life fate of the electronic equipment and batteries we place on the market; and the packaging we use to dispatch equipment. Our material social impacts concern the four people we employ and the conduct of the suppliers we buy from.
Reuse is central to how we trade
A significant part of our business is the rental and leasing of satellite equipment rather than outright sale. Equipment returns to us at the end of each hire, is refurbished, and is re-issued to successive customers. Extending the working life of each unit is the single largest contribution we make to reducing the environmental cost of our sector, and we intend to grow it rather than treat it as incidental.
Substantially all returned rental equipment is refurbished and re-issued rather than disposed of. Units leave our stock only where they have been damaged beyond economic repair, or are no longer supported by the network operator.
Commitment: we will formally measure the proportion of returned rental units returned to service, publish that figure from 2027, and hold it above 95%.
Electronic equipment and batteries
We supply electrical and electronic equipment and portable lithium batteries, sourced from UK suppliers. In reviewing this policy we identified that our arrangements for the end-of-life treatment of that equipment are not yet formalised, and we are addressing it rather than leaving it unstated.
Commitments:
- Establish our exact position under the WEEE Regulations and the Batteries and Accumulators Regulations by 30 September 2026, and register or join an approved takeback scheme where we are required to.
- Offer take-back of old equipment to every customer purchasing replacement hardware, and make that offer visible at the point of sale by 31 December 2026.
- Ensure waste electrical equipment and batteries returned to us are passed only to licensed carriers and approved treatment facilities.
- Review our registration status at each annual review of this policy.
Energy
Our office is leased, which limits our control over the building’s supply and fabric. We will act on what we do control.
We have purchased 100% renewable electricity since April 2006, when we switched to Good Energy two decades before it became common practice in our sector. We have maintained a renewable supply through every change of supplier since, moving to Ecotricity and currently to Octopus Energy. We regard this as a baseline expectation rather than an achievement.
Commitments:
- Continue to purchase 100% renewable electricity, and treat this as non-negotiable at every contract renewal.
- Measure our electricity consumption monthly and establish 2026 as our baseline year for consumption reduction.
- Reduce electricity consumption per employee by 15% against the 2026 baseline by 2030.
Packaging and waste
Commitments:
- Remove single-use plastic from our outbound packaging by 31 December 2027.
- Use recycled or certified cardboard for all outbound shipments.
- Reuse inbound packaging for outbound dispatch wherever the condition of the material allows.
- Operate paperless billing and documentation as standard.
Our people
Commitments:
- Pay at or above the Real Living Wage.
- Employ our staff on permanent contracts. We use no agency or seasonal labour and no zero-hours contracts.
- Provide every employee with paid time and budget for training each year.
- Maintain a working environment free from discrimination and harassment, in which any concern can be raised directly with the Director.
Our suppliers
Our hardware and airtime come from a small number of established satellite network operators and their licensed equipment partners. Our leverage over them is limited by our size, and we say so plainly rather than overstating our influence.
Commitments:
- Expect suppliers to comply with applicable law on labour standards, human rights and environmental protection.
- Ask new suppliers about their environmental and labour practices before we begin trading with them.
- Raise concerns with any supplier where we become aware of a problem, and cease trading where it is not addressed.
Governance and review
Richard Offenbach, Company Director, holds accountability for this policy and for sustainability across the business. Given the size of the company, this is a direct responsibility rather than a delegated one.
This policy is reviewed annually. Progress against each target is assessed at review and the policy is updated to reflect what was achieved and what was not.
